Home for a leopard at Daktari

E-mail Print PDF

A very famous leopard found his home at Daktari the 26th of June. His name is Shiloweni.

He was removed from the Sabie Sand area because he was roaming too close to habitations. Then was released in Karongwe game reserve, and some how damaged his two canines which had to be removed. While he was still roaming too close to the lodges in Karongwe conservancy, threatening human lives, he also had problems to protect himself and his preys from other predators and started to lose condition. He had to be put down or stay in captivity for the rest of his life unfortunately.

The decision was made that Shiloweni should then get another chance and kept at Daktari where he could still have a happy life and be used for education of the community. Shiloweni was darted and transferred to Daktari.

The relocation went well but the few first days of his captivity have been very stressful for him and everybody at Daktari. Shiloweni was obviously confused in his new enclosure and was pretty aggressive. We haven’t been able to show him to the children for the first few days but now he has calmed down a bit we are able to drive the children in the car, next to the enclosure, ensuring their safety and Shiloweni’s peace. We like to think that he has now settled down and adopted the Daktari team as his saviours.
